Europe

In the Spring of 2008 Mark Wilson and myself (Andy Chung) took a trip over to Denmark to visit our friend and bike rider Peter Grau. Over the course of the five weeks we were over there we traveled to five different countries eating remoulade and Einsbein along the way. These are just a small selection of the photos taken over the course of this time.

This is Peter driving us back to his zone (Sønderborg) from the Hamburg airport. He’s driving his brothers car which has a robot that tells you where to go (okay it’s just GPS but it’s pretty entertaining when it talks).

After falling asleep in the car I woke up to this stop. It’s some border store between Denmark and Germany near a bunch of sex shops. It was really awesome.

Sex Shap.

So at the Poetzsch there was this shopping cart escalator. I was very impressed with Europe at this point and it was only day one.

Finally got to Graus zone, it’s nice.

Grau was psyyyched.

I took a photo of the area, this was a couple blocks away from Peter’s, at some castle.

This is the inside of Peter’s house. The photos on the right are of our Okanagan trip we took last Summer, and various places around Vancouver. The albums behind Mark are all gnarly metal, which apparently everyone in Scandinavia listens too.

Mark was real psyched to finally be reunited with the bear trash can at the local park.

We rode this park at the town of Dybbøl which was incredible.

House at Dybbøl.

The graffiti is also inspiring.

More local sites. VIKINGS. Where is Rene?

We went out to the beach and took this awesome photo.

Here’s a photo of the beach that doesn’t have my face in it. Fishing van!

After that we went and flew kites at these giant wind turbines. We bought a kite shaped like a bee and flew the shit out of it during this trip, in memory of the WILD WIND from the Okanagan trip.

Here’s another photo from the windmill. I was really psyched on pictures of myself waving in front of things during this trip, and Mark was equally stoked on taking photos of me doing it.

This is the BEE KITE. YEAH!

So after about 3 days in Denmark we departed on the train portion of the trip. This is in the Hamburg trainstation on our way to Amsterdam on Day 1. Peter got SHUT DOWN for taking pictures but I got some.

Peter in Amsterdam, on a boat. We took this boat ride around and it was very touristy. We were pretty much asian tourists for this entire trip, or at least we were half asian tourists.

Here’s a nice little Space Invader piece found on the streets of Amsterdam. Saw some stuff by Above and The London Police on the trip as well.

Yeah man Amsterdam. Amsterdam is pretty crazy, and the tourists love smoking weed there. Blazeguard would have been real psyched on the Amsterdam scene. Also we went during Queens day, which is the Amsterdam version of St. Patricks Day (or so I understand) so it was extra crazy. We took the bus out one night and every single one of them got diverted to this big outdoor rave thing. It was weird.

Next city we hit up was Brussels. We only got to stay here for one night and I would love to go back. We read the tour book to see what to do here, and I guess the major attraction of Brussels is the ATOMIUM, a giant building shaped like an atom for a worlds fair. The tour book said not to actually go to it and to climb up to this parkade roof instead to look at it. We climbed up to the roof and I didn’t even bother taking a picture of it.

Found this on top of the roof.

Here are Mark and Peter on the rooftop. Peter is pretending to drink brewzz.

Brussels buildings.

I think this is also in Brussels, it’s this park where you go for gay sex at night. Seriously, this is what the tour book said.

NEXT CITY: Luxembourg. This place is epic, just look at it. Actually when we first got off the train we turned the wrong way and ended up in this shitty industrial area, so for a period of about 1 hour we were hating Luxembourg, saying it was the worst shit ever etc. Then we showed up to this area and the city had redeemed itself.

Yep waving in Luxembourg.

After a day in Luxembourg we headed to Trier. We found this under my bunk and it was the cause of much mystery. Who is this Ivan, and where are die Schlampens? (the sluuutz).

We found skeletor in a church.

Trier had some old ass stuff, like this, the Porta Nigra. I guess it’s some Roman gate. This story must be really boring for anyone who isn’t friends with me everyone.

More stuff in churches. After seeing about two churches you become completely over seeing churches, they are all the same. Who cares whateva.

We then went to Esslingen to stay with Marks family friends. We were greeted with this and I was really really happy.

Esslingen had awesome loiter spots like this, in vineyards and stuff. Lots of loitering happened.

This was the hike up to Marks family friends’ place. It was steep. Gettin’ sweaty.

Amazing view from up top.

Did you know they have pigeons in Europe too? Who knew.

This was also in Esslingen. Really look at this photo for a little bit. It has to be the weirdest sculpture I’ve ever seen, and it’s a piece of public art. LOOK AT IT, fucking creepy.

ONWARDS, to Munich. We spent a day here at the museum of technology, which is amazing. It has everything, aviation, bridges, cameras, printing, astronomy, computers, etc etc. Everything is covered and it is seriously amazing. We spent the whole day here and didn’t even see everything. Go there.

Cameras at the museum of technology.

We had an over night train from Munich to Berlin, and 4 hours to kill at the trainstation so we decided it would be good idea to get loose for the train ride. We figured in that case we’d just pass out on the train. It was actually a horrible idea and the train ride just sucked. I had to piss a lot and the stupid train station only had pay toilets. This made for a lot of speed urinating, where you get on trains during their stop and take a leak on them before they leave again.

Berlin! Jewish holocaust memorial, pretty crazy space.

Berlin wall.

Architecture in Helsinki Berlin.

Piet Mondrian Myspace style photo!

That was the end of our first train trip. It took 12 days and we went through Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, Trier, Esslingen, Munich and Berlin. This is back in Sonderborg, riding bikes.

This is the Danfoss Universe building. There are two of this insane tranny buildings. One of them has a science exhibit inside, and one of them has a burger shack. We ate in the burger shack. Here we are heading over to ride it.

Peter getting his carve on.

We then left on our SECOND TRAIN PORTION, up north to Norway. This is in Northern Denmark, in Frederikhavn (I think). It’s this tiny town and their claim to fame is having the most northern palm beach in the world. Peter and Mark pussied out and slept while I went out and found the beach. These are the most northern Palms in the WORLD. AIAIAIAI.

On our way to Oslo we had to take a detour to Gothenburg due to the Oslo ferry being out of service.

We didn’t do shit in Oslo and moved straight on to FLAM. This place was pretty much dead for 22 hours a day, but about twice a day the tourist train would come in and the place would fill up like crazy. It was an insanely scenic place. We camped here.

We hiked up high in Flam to a waterfall. Here is Peter hiking up and the town beneath us.

Here is Peter again at the falls. Wahoo.

Here’s the tent set up. The tents were purchased in Denmark for about $10CAD each. Vital to this trip was the iPod which as you can see has been modded out with spraypaint and engraving. Norway is insanely expensive so you can see my dinner on the right, some kind of pastry and a big bowl of MR LEE NOODLES.

Finally we made it to Stavanger, and we climbed to the top of the Pulpit rock.

Pulpit rock proved to ultimately be the most epic place in the world, and also wrapped up our trip. After this we headed back on a 19 hour bus/boat/train ride to Sonderborg, and a couple days later we were back home in Vancouver.

It was an amazing five weeks. Thanks again to Peter to putting us up in his house and letting us eat his food and having an infinite supply of He-Man episodes to watch!
