So I just did a bit of googling to see if there had been anything written about this, and there doesn’t really seem to be anything. Anyway, I thought I would write this just for the sake of getting some traffic through google, since I’m sure there are millions of idiots like me who would like to do this.

Basically this is a how-to on how to get an animated gif as your twitter icon. If everyone starts doing this it will probably ruin twitter even more, and the average IQ will drop even farther.

Step 1: find or make an animated gif. Name it whatever you like, we’ll use icon.gif as an example.

Step 2: rename the extension icon.png

Step 3: Upload to twitter. That’s it. You might want to try and keep the dimensions to 48px or so, as I didn’t have any luck with a 75px wide image.
