Ryan Making Things in Toronto

front

Ryan just sent through a bunch of photos of projects he’s been working on at U of T’s Masters of Architecture program. Here’s what he had to say about it.

This project was to create an architectural model sited on our desks that contained a number of required spaces (a secluded niche area, an inside-outside area, a tall space with little light, etc.) that directly addressed the conditions of the site.

I designed a screen to act as a privacy barrier between myself and my neighbor which is an interesting statement in the open environment of our studio space.  What I began investigating was the effect of transparency, opacity, reflection, light and space in creating a mediating space between the desks. Depending on the quality of the light the screen operates in very different ways.  From the left side the surface of the project has subtracted elements to register the volumes of the project; to juxtapose this, the right side of the project depending on the quality of the light shows the ghost of the volumes within and mirrors the surroundings on the surface.   The project is entirely made out of plexiglass and is frosted different amounts to create varying levels of opacity and transparency.

Hit the jump for the photos.

  1. This is rad! Really cool how it’s both a concept model and also a functional piece with a practical purpose.

There should be more architecture posts on Gnarwhale.

  2. This is awesome! I’d love to see some more Architecture related stuff over here at GnarWhale. Hell I’d even be willing to contribute with my recent free time (unemployment). Let me know guys! Great stuff as usual… more room checks!
