iPod Bastard Pop

I made a mashup called Ishmael Goes to France and Germany, and then I used an iPod Touch to control Ableton Live to play it. Video and mp3 after the jump.
Get the Flash Player to see this player.
You can download the .mov here, or the .mp3 here.
The tracks I used are:
Abdullah Ibrahim - Ishmael
Sebastien Tellier - Look
Tangerine Dream - One Night In Space
Ralph Towner - Piscean Dance
The iPod/iPhone software I used to control Ableton Live is TouchOSC and OSCulator.
The Ralph Towner song (the drums) and the Ibrahim song (the bassline) are two of my favourite songs ever, and it was fun to use them in a way that would probably make their creators throw up. I’ll post another one of these in the next few weeks once its done.
EDIT. Andy says I should post this explanation:
The left fader is a delay thing on the bassline, the middle one is a bass/treble thing on the cymbal wash (which is just an EQed part of the bassline), the one on the right controls the volume of the flanger which is the crosshairs thing on the right (affects only the Seb Tellier track), the blue sideways fader is obviously pan on the Tellier track, the blue button at the bottom is just a “next track” button that skips from part to part, etc… Oh also the crosshairs also control an EQ thing on the guitar solo track, but because the solo and the full seb tellier tracks are never at the same time they don’t interfere.
I don’t know if that makes any sense, but hey.
This is super fun
That setup is so freaking cool, and the song is really good to boot, definitely not your typical crap.
that’s really sweet
man, thats really awesome. makes me want to get a touch even more.
Listened to it a bunch of times at work already, super psyched on this mix!!
When they make a photoshop for iPod touch, we will battle.
That was rad! I started to mess with Ableton live a few years ago, but never had the time to get into it… I wish I did!
Do you listen to Jazzanova?
Glad everyone is psyched. Harrison, I downloaded some Jazzanova and I see why you asked; lots of similarities. For me though, it’s not about creating that kind of music, it’s just using stuff in new contexts and giving some tracks I really love a new veneer. Like, that drumline from Piscean Dance is part of a song that is way WAY too out there to get regular rotation–even from me, and it might be my favourite song of all time–, and taking one amazing line from it for this was really satisfying.
Hopefully having an ipod touch will teach Brian not to smack down on his keypad in such a violent fashion. It makes me so mad.
really cool, really cool.
this is pretty ballin’, i have included it in my session playlist.
On another note, someone told me that brian park moved to victoria, i’m just curious as a saw a hobo-ish looking guy riding at gordo who i thought to be brian park.
Yep, I was there a while ago. You the brakeless mtb guy?
I bet you ate that fucking iPod.
Nope, that’s Alex. I was just hanging out, but i ride a purple fit.
Great track. It’s rare to hear people mentioning such musicians as Ralph Towner on the Net. I’m not sure at all he would “throw up” listening to your mix. He’s such a nice guy with an open mind… Man what a GREAT drum part, I loved it right away and now I know why : I realized it’s Jon Christensen playing, one of my favourite drummer (actually I recorded with him in Oslo once in 1999 !). Again I can hear you respect those guys and love their music.
BTW I got your URL from OSCulator’s website. I’m having a lot of fun controlling Live with it and my iPhone.
Wow, thanks for your comment. I’m glad you’re having fun with OSCulator; this sort of thing makes me less cynical about new music.
I’m really glad you appreciate the track, and think that Ralph (etc.) would as well, Actually Jon Christensen was my crazy old violin teacher’s favourite drummer as well; he built a whole room around listening to jazz drums… it’s through him that I got introduced to a lot of that sort of stuff.
I sure would have liked to meet your violin teacher
What kind of music do you usually make ?
Here’s my website http://www.michelbenita.com if you want to check out my stuff. If you click on the player’s forward buttons, there are 2 excerpts from that album I mentionned (Rita Marcotulli - Night Caller 1992 and not 1999 !).

Houses are expensive and not everybody can buy it. However, loans are created to aid people in such kind of hard situations.
I will recommend not to hold back until you earn enough cash to buy different goods! You should just get the loans or secured loan and feel fine
