I love photography

I guess that’s pretty obvious, but this post made me realize that my obsession with scouting out photos on the internet is more than bordering on unhealthy.

Photographers I’ve bookmarked in the past couple months and a few classics from before that too.

WARNING: Couple of boobies below so it’s a little NSFW.

Ashes and Snow by Gregory Colbert. Utterly Amazing. Maybe I’ve been sleeping on this but I can’t believe this hasn’t been blogged about more. Make sure to click on the “Enhanced Experience” option.

Short write up on the influential school of German Photography.

Has to be one the best photos taken in ever. Look at that! OH MY GOD. ffffound it and it says getty images at the bottom, but apart from that I can’t figure out who took it or anything else. My inability to speak german doesn’t help so if you know anything about it, please post it in the comments!

Good read about fashion’s premier retoucher Pascal Dangin on the NYT.

Cristobal Palma. Based between London and Santiago whose work spans architecture, urban and travel photography.

In december when I was in Singapore I visited a photo studio/lab where my friend worked as a printer. There were amazing giant prints lying all over the place and it turns out the work was by fashion photographer Zhang Jingna. If that site doesn’t work too well for you, here’s her flickr. If you knew how old this girl was you’d freak… Many are hailing her as a prodigy and for good reason. Let’s just say it wasn’t too long ago that she was still in high school.

Fashion photographer Bharat Sikka on the Julian Meijer agency. Such great style, casual feeling but technically refined with really effective use of environments.

First saw this on the anti-corporation blog. Book by Jung and Wenig called Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I emailed them about it and here’s an excerpt of the reply:
“[W]e used several printing-techniques in the book : offset , silkscreen [we used a special colour which you can scratch away from the pages] , digital , manuel offset ; the manual folding of the posters.”
Definitely one of the most interesting books I’ve read about in a while. It’s really great to see designers putting so much special care into their printing process. The series of photos look very interesting too.

Flickr of Matthew Johnston who goes around NY taking pictures of places, buildings, and monuments that are featured in GTA’s Liberty City. He then takes those shots and makes diptychs with screencaps from the game. Pretty damn crazy.

Thobias Fäldt from Sweden. Unique eye, great series concepts, and incredibly skilled use of flash.

Debora Mittelstaedt. Originally from Cologne but now in Brooklyn, named as one of PDN’s 30 emerging photographers to watch. She has a lovely way of making every shot feel like a still from a movie. I just wanna jump into every photo and find out what happens in each story for real… bit strange actually.

Remain in Light, a new print publication featuring photographs by contemporary photographers. Both Fäldt and Mittelstaedt are in it, so if you really like this style of photography (to over generalize a lot) you’ll really like this publication. The above photo is by Mark McKnight .

Apparently a volcano in Chile erupted in the middle of a lighting storm and a photographer was there to take photos of it. If I was staring at that scene through my lens I’d probably get so excited it would be like eating 50 deep fried mars bars and 70 milkshakes at once then I’d die.

Shabazz has been shooting the african american communities and life in Brooklyn for over 25 years as documented in the book Seconds of My Life. Highly influential and the pictures are just amazing, definitely check it out if you get a chance. One of the most powerful photo books I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning. Also explains pretty much everything about pop culture now… A fashion and cultural history lesson.

Speaking of Brooklyn, the famed and much talked about Boogie shoots the same areas but in contemporary terms and in a much starker manner. It’d be an interesting case study to compare Shabazz and him, could go on for ages about it. Have nothing but respect for this man and what he does. If you’ve never seen his work before, hit that link now!

A photo gallery of Henri Cartier-Bresson shooting photos if that should so interest you. Probably the most interesting street photographer to watch shoot is Joel Meyorwitz though. You can see a produced-for-mass-entertainment video of him here (I love it when programs show the actual photo after showing the shooting footage). The video production is pretty obnoxious but c’est la vie. However, you should definitely watch the BBC’s The Genius of Photography if you can find it. Really good footage of HCB and Meyerowitz shooting. It’s amazing, definitely watched every episode more than a few times.

Marcio Simnch fashion photography. Really like this, and a unique photo browsing format on the site.

Britta Jaschinski, great style and one of the most in-demand animal photographers in the world. Frank and stark.

Noah Kalina. Always look forward to his flickr updates. This is the same guy who became famous by taking a photo of himself everyday for 2356 days and making a video out of it.

François Coquerel, another person I get really excited about whenever he updates his flickr. He shoots for Monocle and the BBC, love his style- clean, direct, and seems like he normally uses just natural lighting.

Clayton Cubbit. He does much work on Hurricane Katrina (having grown up in the area where it hit) but also shoots a lot of sex related stuff. Much of his site is very very NSFW, but also really interesting. I guess when you are doing a macro shot of a moist vagina with intense blue lighting there is pretty much no way it could be uninteresting.

Alexy Titarenko . Not a massive fan of most of his body of work but am really feeling the long exposures in the “City of Shadows” series.

Mark Story’s portraits of old people with really interesting faces. Great project. The blogosphere has loved this guy for a long time now.

Some great street photography by someone who I think was named Evgenijj Ananevich Khaldejj? Unfortunately I can’t read Russian and I also suck at history so that’s all the description I’ve got on this one.
UPDATE: My good friend Walker Smith hit me up with this link explaining the photos and the stories behind them. Really interesting and definitely worth the visit. Wow Walker, I owe you a beer.

Harrison Boyce is better known for his design and art direction work, but fact is the man is also very talented with a camera.

I guess everyone and their step mothers dog know that the world famous and absolutely incredible Ryan Mcginley has a new exhibition this summer. But if you’ve ever wanted to know what outfits he wears everyday, then you can click here and find out. The guy has good dress sense and all but the thoroughness and number of outfits in there kinda worries me… Guess people really want to see what he’s wearing. Pretty funny considering most of his images feature people who aren’t wearing anything.

Fashion photography by Stefania Paparelli. Her full portfolio can be found here. Stunning work, I love the way she flirts with different styles but maintains a consistency between past ideology and present aesthetics. If that sounded like a load of art jargon garbage than it probably is, I like making stuff like that up.

Skate photographer Brian Gaberman. Easily one of the best action sport photographers in the world, one of my personal favourite photographers ever. I believe he is still the youngest photographer to have ever been published in B+W Magazine. Stuart Kennedy once missed his dinner because he was studying Gaberman’s portfolio, almost a true story!

Vancouver local Scott Pommier got a new website and has a complete obsession with motorcycles. Incredible skate and motorbike photographer, Hasselblad and Harley Davidson dwell in his client’s list, and he is teaching at the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria, BC. Must have a tough life that guy… Wish his site had more of his older skate work though.

The banger! My favourite fashion photographer for a long time now- Jean François Lepage. His stuff blows my head off.

That’s it! Better stop now or I could go on forever. Until next time. Go out and shoot lots of photos!

  10. I opine that to get the personal loans from creditors you ought to present a good reason. Nevertheless, one time I’ve got a car loan, just because I wanted to buy a house.
